April 2020 Launch on Canvas

This 4 week online course began as a graduate group project on lesson design. This self-paced open online course will teach typeface basics for beginning to intermediate instructional designers.

As I've worked to develop the course, I've placed portions of it into Canvas, Moodle, and Openlearning. Each LMS offers unique constraints that impact the flow of course content.  Developing iteratively between the three platforms has been a very useful exercise.  Simply moving one idea developed in Moodle to Openlearning immediately highlights even subtle differences between the platforms, and has illustrated for me how significantly a LMS shapes course design and the learning experience.

I settled on Canvas as the LMS for the course because it is rapidly becoming the platform standard for higher education courses.

Video Synopsis

For the graduate course assignment, I partnered with two classmates to create three lessons that worked together. Each of us coordinated the design of our lessons to support learning outcomes for our project. Each of us created a video to describe our lesson and how it supports the learning in the other two lessons.

SPOILER ALERT: I should warn you that the video below makes reference to The Sound of Music. You may be rolling your eyes right about now, but bear with me on this. I just couldn't help myself, and I think it works in this instance. You be the judge. In any case, I had fun making the video, and it provides some insight into my initial thoughts regarding the course that would eventually result from this early exercise.
