Portfolio - Estate Inventory App (iFormBuilder)

In 2016, I used iFormBuilder Zerion to build a small data collection app for a client needing to inventory the personal property of a large estate prior to a formal estate sale (Figure 1 at right). The iFormBuilder platform is easy to use (drag and drop), stable and just plain works. It offers lots of pre-built functions. It's well documented. No surprises. Strong support options. Zero troubleshooting was needed for the app I built. (I mean when does that ever happen?)

Because the number of expected records for the inventory would be less than 500, I chose to use the default table on Zerion's server. To improve accessibility and reporting options of the data captured (including images), I created a dedicated Dropbox folder and sent a copy of the images there. I also created a small table in AirTable to send a copy of new records as they were added using Zapier, including a Dropbox image link associated with each record.

To support the app, which included two main forms and two subforms, I created a small orientation tutorial to cover basic data collection parameters and app navigation.

The Not At All Sexy UI: Looks Aren't Everything

While UI customization options are limited, in the field, attractiveness doesn't matter much. Those nice big white spaces you see beneath each text prompt (Figure 2 below), provides a wide target for the finger on a tablet or phone. A simple UI speeds data collection, reduces entry errors, and increases user confidence and efficiency. Additionally, a straight-forward, no frills UI reduces training time.  In this case, form follows function.

Zerion Cost and Availability

Last year they stopped supporting small business and now service only large enterprise clients. The lowest pricing level is $5000 a year. Very disappointing. However, if you are working with a large client seeking options for building field apps quickly and easily or seeking a trouble free way to connect to existing data sources, check this company out. They offer an outstanding product.
